Carlos Cornier Well, I have
really good news! My friend, Carlos Cornier has successfully survived
a close call with Cancer! His operation was a success but will be costly
because of a lack of adequate health insurance.
Friends are currently helping him find an insurance
program but this is always a difficulty with musicians. More importantly,
health insurance is an issue for more and more people these days, especially
for those who, like Carlos, have pre-existing conditions.
Communities are doing their best to be as helpful
as they can be but the truth is that, to date, there is no simple solution
for independent workers and the unemployed.
Please stop by tomorrow night if you can
make it!!
Brick--
Update!!!
We ( BLT ) played this gig last night and it rocked.
We took the hard spot in the line up playing after "Sons
of the Never Wrong"
We at OTSFM are a close knit community. Meaning that we are close-- and
we knit together. Okay not really, but we are close enough that our children
are growing up together. My daughter skated with the daughter of Joel
and Helen Frankel, and I have known Sandy Lucas for the entire time I
have been at OTSFM. They were part of the group that actually managed
the event. Carlos used to live 5 blocks away from me and I have watched
his daughter grow up. We have all played music together and been close
friends for a long time, 17 years for me and more for some of them. So,
it is really no surprise that we would "Circle the Wagons" for
Carlos when he is in need.
The house was full and a good time was had by all. We
made a little cash to help Carlos through this time in his life and we
gathered as friends and family. That's as it should be.
Carlos, my friend, I wish you all the best!

Health Insurance Is A
Right
Not A Privilege
|
Since 2000, Future
of Music Coalition has reframed the challenging issues
at the intersection of music, law, technology and policy to
address the needs of musicians and citizens. In 2005, there
will be over fifty issues that impact musicians in the courts,
on Capitol Hill, at federal agencies and internationally.
We will be working to keep artists and citizens in the mix.
Our work is only possible due to the generous
support of foundations, sponsors, and individuals. The more
money we raise, the more issues we can take on. In the coming
year, we want you to help us help musicians to get information
they need to insure themselves against the costs of sickness
or injury.
For $15 - the price of a CD you can
help one musician negotiate the confusing health insurance
landscape. For $50 you can help four musicians. If you can
afford more, you can help more.. and your contribution is
TAX DEDUCTIBLE!
Here's how it works. In spring of 2005, FMC
will establish a musician's health insurance hotline. Musicians
who want help picking an affordable plan can call this number
and get patient, thoughtful, intelligent advice from insurance
providers (who are also musicians). We are not kidding you.
Your donations will be collected to cover the costs of running
the hotline and paying the insurance experts a reduced fee
for answering health insurance questions as they come in.
Why is this important?
Almost three years ago FMC
conducted a survey about musicians and health insurance. We
learned that the musicians we surveyed were three times less
likely to have health insurance than the national average.
We found that this was regularly due to confusion about what
plans were available for musicians, what type of coverage
was necessary and other common problems. We also learned that
many of the existing plans did not have dedicated staff to
help translate the confusing health insurance landscape to
potential customers.
Health insurance should not be a luxury.
There are many good existing plans and there are organizations
working in coalition with major foundations to offer better
solutions in the future. In the mean time there are real human
beings out there on the road, making music and getting sick
without coverage.
We hope this hotline will serve as a bridge
between what exists now and what could be built in the future.
